Govt revokes VOAs for three countries
SEREMBAN: The Government has revoked the visa-on-arrival (VOA) facility for nationals from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The ruling came into effect on Aug 1.
“A Home Ministry circular has been sent out on the latest directive. We do not know why there has been this sudden change in policy,” a source said.
He said the VOA privilege, introduced in September 2006 to promote tourism, would not be extended to nationals from Afghanistan, Colombia, Israel, Montenegro, Serbia and 21 countries in the African continent as well.
It is learnt that the Cabinet made the decision at a recent meeting.
The VOA allows foreign tourists to apply for a 30-day visa at six major entry points.
They are the KL International Airport, Bayan Lepas, Senai, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu internartional airports and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Tanjung Kupang, Johor.
Applicants need to pay RM100 for the VOA.
In June, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung had said that 68,238 of the 208,451 holders of VOAs had overstayed, with Indian nationals the biggest culprits at 35,912, followed by Pakistanis (13,014), Bangladeshis (6,688), Chinese (5,452) and Sri Lankans (5,093).
The source said it did not make sense for the VOA to be revoked when the Government was aggressively promoting tourism.
He said that those granted VOAs must also have sponsors here.
Immigration director-general Datuk Mahmood Adam confirmed the VOA revocation order for certain countries.
“Several high commissions and embassies have appealed to review the ruling.
“We will forward this to the Home Ministry for consideration,” he added.
